Dalton Park Phase 2 starts on site

Napper have celebrated with the Dalton Park team at the official start to the £20 million Phase 2 development, with a traditional ‘groundbreaking’ attended by local dignitaries and project team members. The completed scheme will provide a significant leisure extension to the existing Dalton Park retail offer. Phase 2 has attracted top operators including a Cineworld 7 screen cinema, Pizza Express and a Morrisons Superstore, in addition to a hotel and family public house. The project, scheduled to open in May 2016, will create up to 500 new retail jobs and up to 400 construction jobs during the build phase.

Graeme Dodd, Managing Director of Napper said “It is very exciting to be working on Dalton Park again. It is over ten years since we completed Phase 1 and we have been delighted with the response to our design and how this has contributed to the commercial success of Dalton Park. The team have worked extremely hard to ensure this next phase would become a reality and we look forward to seeing its contribution to Dalton Park’s continued success.”

Jerry Hatch, Centre Manager is delighted that work is now ‘officially’ underway: “Phase 2 will be a tremendous addition to the community and the region. Not only will it enhance our current retail offer and provide a fantastic range of leisure and service facilities for visitors, it will provide a significant number of new jobs thereby continuing our investment in local regeneration.”

Grahame Morris, MP for Easington, reflected on the journey towards finally breaking ground saying “I am delighted that work is beginning on the long sought after next phase. The ground breaking represents nearly two decades of work by the local community, local representatives and developers to complete both the retail and leisure aspects of Dalton Park. Without the continued support of everyone involved, Murton and the surrounding area would not be benefitting from these local jobs and vital economic activity on the former coalfield site”.

Since opening in 2003, Dalton Park has become one of the region’s top retail destinations with sales and visitor levels increasing year on year.
