Napper complete new Art Gallery for Asian and Buddhist Art
30 July 2018
Napper Architects have recently completed the Woon Gallery of Asian Art at Northumbria University with support of the Woon Foundation. The Gallery houses items from the Foundation’s Collection to support research and public exhibition in the North East of England.
The gallery has been formed through the refurbishment of existing accommodation within the University to provide new exhibition space, with central display areas to house the historic artefacts. New display walls are illuminated with state-of-the-art museum lighting to both protect the exhibits and show them in their best setting.
Each item has been selected for its contribution not only to the understanding and application of craft and making but also the relationship of Buddhist Art to culture and religious belief, practice, and devotion, particularly the representation of the divine through physical form and materiality.
The refurbishment was completed whilst the building remained operational and was formally opened by the Foundation in time to be part of The Great Exhibition of the North 2018.
